The Mechanisms Behind a 50-year Rainfall Event: A Boundary Perspective

Ali Cole

In May, 2019, the small island of Yonaguni received almost 400 mm of rainfall in one 24-hour period. Previously, I have explored this project from a modeling, reanalysis, and observations perspective to try to understand both what caused the event and why the WRF forecasting model so heavily under-forecast the event. This work focuses on examining a boundary that formed in the WRF model run that may have been responsible for this heavy rainfall event, as well as comparing different reanalysis and modeling fields to determine if this boundary likely actually occurred or was simply a modeling artifact.
